A fearless goat-herding dog who refused to abandon his herd amid the California wildfires miraculously escaped the fires that burned the property down completely.
Roland Tembo Hendel said his family and he were surprised to see their dog, Odin, his sister Tessa, and their eight bottle-fed goats survived the deadly Tubbs fire that destroyed his property in Sonoma County.
Roland wrote in a long Facebook post that has gone viral how they had to leave Odin behind along with the goats after rushing to pack their other dogs and cats to escape the rapidly approaching fire.
“At 11:10 we could see the first fire across the valley,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
Roland Tempo Hendel said his family was surprised to see that his dog Odin and eight goats fed with a bottle survived the deadly fire of the Tubbs fire that destroyed his property.
Hendell said that in a matter of minutes the fire was approaching his property, which caused him to quickly gather some stuff along with the family cats and dogs. But when trying to get Odin, the dog will not abandon the eight goats.
He wrote: “Even under the best of circumstances, it is almost impossible to separate Odin from the goats after nightfall when he takes over the close watch from his sister Tessa. I decided to leave him, and I doubt I could have made him come with us if I try. ”
