Best friends do not have to look anything alike to make a great team, just like these unusual animal friendships prove. Rescue Tortoise and a dog become the “best of friends.” Larry The tortoise was rescued from a bully by the other tortoise and taken to the home of Cricket the Golden Retriever.
When Christine Hill took her children to the Animal Education Center in Santa Barbara, California, she did not think she wanted to go home with a complete grown tortoise. However Larry, the African spurred tortoise, was entangled in a group of four, and he was getting savagely attacked by the other males in his enclosure as they compete for the affections of a female.
When Hill and her children saw Larry getting pushed around they complained to his keeper, but they said they wanted nature to sort them out. However, Hill eventually persuaded the center to take Larry home with her to stop the bullying.
Hill describes herself as a passionate animal lover, and her home in Palos Verdes is in a constant rotation of a variety of rescued animals, including sea snakes and lobsters that she bought at seafood restaurants to save. We have about thirty animals at the moment.” Says
“When we first brought Larry home he was in a self-defense position, just trying to flee the fence any chance he got,” she says.
But Hill finally persuaded Larry inside the house, where he met the family's golden retriever, Cricket.
