They eat side by side, sleep next to each other in the kitchen and continue to walk together. Last year, when Larry went into hibernation, he insisted on burying himself under the cricket bed in Hill’s bedroom.
Sulcata, or African spurred tortoise (Geochelone Centrochelys Sulcata), is naturally found in the southern end of the Sahara Desert, and they can live for more than 70 years. Hill adds that Larry thrives in the hot, dry climate of southern California.
“He's a funny little guy, he has so much character,” she says. “He will come trembling down the hallway to greet us with Cricket when we get home. Cricket and Larry really are best of buds.”
